Most video editing starts with a timeline: clips, cuts and waveforms you push around until the words land right. For anyone whose video is mostly talking, that is the slow way in.
Descript turns the job around. It transcribes your recording, and you edit the video by editing the text. Delete a sentence in the transcript and the video cuts with it. This review covers what Descript does, how its plans and media minutes work, who it suits and who should stay with a timeline editor. Our analysis uses Descript’s published pricing page, checked on 2026-10-05. You can see Descript on the vendor’s site.

What is Descript?
Descript is an AI video and audio editor. You record or upload, get a transcript, and edit by cutting words. Around that core it adds screen recording, captions, AI speech, stock AI voices, filler word removal and tools that clean up or rebuild parts of a recording. It suits speech-led content: podcasts, interviews, explainers, training and social clips cut from longer recordings.
How much does Descript cost?
Descript prices per person per month, with a discount for annual billing. The plan structure below is Descript’s current published lineup, checked on descript.com/pricing on 2026-10-05. Check the live page before you buy, because plans change. You can check Descript pricing on the vendor’s site.
| Plan | Billed annually (per person/month) | Month to month | Media minutes per month | AI credits per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 60, watermarked exports | 100 one-time |
| Hobbyist | $16 | $24 | 600 | 400 |
| Creator | $24 | $35 | 1,800 | 800 |
| Business | $50 | $65 | 2,400 | 1,500 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Two limits decide value here. First, media minutes: Descript defines them as the minutes of imported or recorded media processed in Descript, counted per editor, so long recordings eat the budget faster than short clips. Top-ups for extra media minutes are available on Creator and Business. Second, the free plan’s exports carry a watermark, so it is a test tier, not a publishing tier.
What are Descript’s key features?
Per Descript’s published specs, these are the features that decide which plan fits.
Edit by text. Cut, copy and rearrange words in the transcript and the underlying audio and video follow.
Transcription. Automatic transcripts in 25 languages drive the editing model and captions, per Descript’s pricing page.
Captions and subtitles. Generate and style captions from the transcript.
AI speech and stock voices. Generate speech or replace a section with a stock AI voice, and create custom voice clones of your own voice. If you need a wider voice library, explore Descript and compare plans first.
Regenerate and speech tools. Descript lists tools that rebuild or correct speech sections. Use them on your own recordings and voices you have the right to use.
Filler word removal. Remove “um” and “uh” across a recording in bulk.
Studio Sound and Green Screen. Descript lists audio cleanup and background replacement among its effects.
Screen recording and remote recording. Record your screen, and record remote sessions with guests inside the product.
Clips and Underlord. Descript lists clip-making for short-form cuts and an AI co-editor named Underlord, included from Hobbyist up. Treat both as vendor-described features until you try them on your own footage.
What does Descript say about itself?
Descript markets itself as an all-in-one editor that makes video editing as easy as editing a document, and its pricing page says more than 6 million creators and teams use it. Those are the vendor’s claims. This review makes no hands-on claims and does not treat vendor numbers as verified.
Who should use Descript?
- Podcasters and interview channels. Speech-led editing saves the most time here.
- Course and training creators. Fix a sentence by fixing the transcript.
- Marketers cutting long recordings into clips. One source, several short outputs.
- Small teams on Creator or Business. Higher media minute pools fit regular publishing.
- Solo creators testing the workflow. The free plan shows the model, watermark aside. When ready, try Descript.
Who should skip Descript?
- Editors who live on a timeline. Effects-heavy and multi-camera work fits a traditional editor better.
- Anyone who needs to publish from the free plan. Exports are watermarked.
- High-volume producers on low tiers. 600 media minutes goes quickly on long recordings.
- Teams that need custom enterprise terms on a list price. Enterprise is custom.
- Creators whose content is mostly music or action. The text-editing edge is in speech.
Questions to ask before you buy
- How many media minutes do I use a month? Count your raw recording time, not finished length.
- Annual or month to month? Annual is cheaper on every paid tier listed.
- Which AI features does my tier include? Confirm stock voices, Regenerate and Underlord access by plan.
- How accurate is transcription on my speakers? Test accents, names and technical terms on the free plan.
- Do I record guests remotely? Check Descript’s remote recording against how you work now.
- What export limits apply? Watermarks, resolution and file types by tier. Hobbyist exports at 1080p and Creator at 4K, per the pricing page.
- What happens when minutes run out? Top-ups are listed on Creator and Business; confirm the rules for your tier.
- Who owns and can reuse a cloned or generated voice? Only use voices you have the right to use.
The verdict
Descript is the clearest example of text-based editing: if your video is people talking, editing the words is faster than editing the waveform. The plans are readable, the free tier shows the workflow, and the feature set covers captions, cleanup and clips in one place.
The catch is media minutes and the watermark on free exports. Count your monthly recording time first, then choose the tier that covers it. Test one real episode on the free plan, then try Descript on the paid tier that fits. Pick Hobbyist for light use, Creator for regular publishing and Business for team volume. Skip it if your editing is mostly visual.
