Every small business finance team knows the pile. Invoices in an inbox, approvals chased over email, a check run that eats a Friday, and a spreadsheet that claims to know what is still unpaid.
Bill, the platform formerly known as Bill.com, exists to clear that pile. It automates accounts payable and accounts receivable: bills come in, get approved, get paid, and get recorded without the paper shuffle. This review covers what Bill does, what it costs per user, and who should skip it. Figures are from bill.com/product/pricing, checked 2026-10-04. If your payables process is the bottleneck, you can try Bill and run your own bills through it.

What is Bill?
Bill is a financial operations platform built around AP and AR automation for small and mid-size businesses and the accounting firms that serve them. Per Bill, vendors send bills in, your team approves them against set rules, payments go out, and everything syncs with your accounting software. The AR side handles invoicing customers and receiving their payments in the same system. Bill also says its network connects businesses with 8M+ vendors. That is the vendor’s figure.
Bill also sells a separate product, Spend and Expense (formerly Divvy), for company cards and expense management. It appears in this review only where the pricing page puts it, because it is priced differently from the AP/AR plans.
Bill’s own marketing claims it helps teams spend 50% less time on AP and get paid 2x faster. Those are vendor claims; the time claim is footnoted on the pricing page to a 2021 survey of over 2,000 Bill customers.
How much does Bill cost?
As of 2026-10-04, bill.com/product/pricing listed the plans below, priced per user per month. A free trial is available “in most cases” for AP/AR plans, per the vendor; you can start a Bill AP trial to check your eligibility.
| Plan | Price (per user/month) | What Bill lists |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $49 | AP automation and invoicing, manual CSV import/export for accounting sync, standard approval policies, 6 standard user roles |
| Team | $65 | Adds automatic 2-way sync with QuickBooks and Xero, custom user roles, AI invoice coding, cash flow forecasting |
| Corporate | $89 (listed Most Popular) | Adds custom approval policies, Bill Procurement (purchase requests, purchase orders, 2-way matching), single sign-on, multi-entity and multi-location capabilities |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Adds 2-way sync with QuickBooks Enterprise, Oracle NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics and Acumatica, dual control, premium phone support |
The subscription is only the first layer of cost. Transaction fees apply on top of every plan. Per Bill’s pricing page (checked 2026-10-04), the key payor fees are: ACH/ePayment $0.59, mailed check $1.99, virtual card free, international FX wire free (an exchange rate applies), international USD wire $19.99, Pay Faster ACH $11.99, instant payment 1.0% ($9.99 minimum, $100 maximum), and pay by card 2.9%. Receivers also pay fees on some methods (for example ACH/ePayment $0.59 and card 2.9%). Map your payment mix against that list before you budget, because a business paying mostly by card faces a very different real cost from one paying by ACH. Read Bill’s pricing page for the full fee schedule.
Two things sit outside the table. First, Bill lists its Spend and Expense product at $0 per user per month, including corporate cards, budgets and expense tracking, with access to credit lines from $1,000 to $5M. Bill’s own footnote says those credit lines are not guaranteed and are determined on application approval. It is a separate product, not a tier of AP/AR; see Bill Spend and Expense for its terms. Second, per Bill, transaction fees sit outside the subscription price, as detailed above. The neat monthly figure is not the final monthly figure.
What are Bill’s key features?
Per Bill’s site, these are the features that decide which tier fits.
AP automation. Receive, approve and pay bills in one workflow, starting from a centralized bill inbox.
AR automation. Send invoices and receive payments in the same system, with reminders and auto-charge per the vendor.
W-9 handling. Automatic W-9 collection and verification, per Bill.
Spend and Expense. A separate product priced at $0 per user per month, per Bill, for company cards, budgets and reimbursements (formerly Divvy).
Approvals and controls. Approval policies replace email chains: standard on Essentials, custom on Corporate, with dual control on Enterprise.
Accounting sync. Manual CSV import/export on Essentials; automatic 2-way sync with QuickBooks and Xero from Team; Enterprise adds QuickBooks Enterprise, Oracle NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics and Acumatica.
API and support. API access is listed on all plans, and live chat and phone support are listed on all plans, with premium phone support on Enterprise. To see which tier fits, compare Bill plans.
Who should use Bill?
- Small and mid-size businesses paying bills manually. AP automation is the core win.
- Finance teams that need approval trails. Approvals are recorded, not buried in email.
- Accountants and firms handling client AP. Bill is sold to accounting firms as well as businesses.
- Companies that also want cards and expenses handled. Spend and Expense is listed at $0 per user per month, per Bill.
- Multi-entity or international operators. Multi-entity and multi-location capabilities start at Corporate; Enterprise adds the deeper sync list.
- Anyone who wants to test the workflow. Start with your real payables, then decide. When ready, try Bill.
Who should skip Bill?
- Solo operators with a handful of bills a month. $49 per user per month, plus transaction fees, is hard to justify at low volume.
- Anyone whose accounting software is not supported at their tier. Check the sync list for your plan before anything else.
- Teams that only need expense cards. Spend and Expense is separate and listed at $0 per user per month. You may not need AP/AR at all.
- Businesses that need ERP depth. Bill is AP/AR automation, not a full ERP.
- Anyone who will not read the fees. Transaction fees sit outside the headline price on every plan.
Questions to ask before you buy
- How many users do we need? Per-user pricing means every seat is a line item.
- Which transactions carry extra fees for us? Map your payment mix against the fee list: ACH at $0.59 is a different budget from pay by card at 2.9%.
- Does Bill sync with our accounting software at our tier? CSV on Essentials, QuickBooks and Xero 2-way sync from Team, the wider ERP list on Enterprise.
- Do we need multi-entity or multi-location? Those start at Corporate.
- What approval structure do we run today? Match it against the tier table: standard, custom, then dual control on Enterprise.
- Do we want Spend and Expense too? It is separate and listed at $0 per user per month. Decide independently, and note the credit line footnote.
- Is a free trial available for our plan? Bill says a trial is available “in most cases” for AP/AR plans.
- What support do we need? Live chat and phone support are listed on all plans; premium phone support is on Enterprise.
The verdict
Bill is a solid pick for businesses whose payables have outgrown inboxes and spreadsheets. The tier ladder is clear, each step adds a named capability, and the separate Spend and Expense product gives finance teams a low-risk place to start.
The catch is arithmetic and scope. The real cost is the per-user subscription plus per-transaction fees, and per-user pricing rewards small, efficient teams. Price your actual seat count and payment mix, not the brochure example. Try Bill if approvals are your bottleneck. Skip it if your bill volume is tiny or your accounting platform is not supported at your tier.
