Rippling Review: Pricing, Payroll, and Who It’s Actually For

Rippling review: many scattered business tools consolidating into one unified platform

What is Rippling?

Rippling is a workforce management platform that combines HR, payroll, IT, and finance in one system. It started as an HR and payroll tool and has grown into an all-in-one platform for companies that want to manage the full employee lifecycle from onboarding to offboarding.

The pitch is simple: instead of running separate tools for HR, payroll, device management, and expenses, Rippling puts them on one employee record. Change a salary in HR and payroll updates. Offboard someone and their laptop access gets revoked automatically.

Rippling’s own site says the platform starts at $8 per user per month. That is the only dollar figure Rippling publishes. Everything beyond the base platform is modular, and full pricing requires a custom quote.

How much does Rippling cost?

Short answer: it depends on which modules you pick, and Rippling will not give you the full number without a sales call.

Rippling uses an à la carte model. You start with the Rippling platform, then add products: payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, IT management, finance, and more. Most products are priced per employee per month, though some modules add a monthly base fee.

What we know from Rippling’s own site:

  • The platform starts at $8 per user per month.
  • Full module pricing is custom quote only.
  • There are two platform editions: Core and Pro. Pro adds advanced features like Formula Fields, webhooks, and enhanced reporting. Forbes notes the Core plan limits custom workflows and formula fields, so the edition you pick affects what automations you can build.

What the reviewers add:

  • Forbes Advisor (rating 3.9, audited July 3, 2026) warns that “basic payroll management can be expensive” and that pricing requires a demo to get a custom quote.
  • Business.com (Editor’s Score 9.4/10) says Rippling does not publish pricing and notes that the modular approach can get expensive once you stack several products. Its bottom line on pricing: request a detailed quote so you know exactly what is included before signing.

If transparent, published pricing matters to you, that is a real strike against Rippling. Both reviewers point to Gusto as the transparent alternative.

What does Rippling payroll do?

Payroll is an optional add-on module, not part of the base platform. Here is what Rippling’s payroll page lists:

  • Automatic tax filing for federal, state, and local taxes.
  • Direct deposit, reimbursements, deductions, and garnishments.
  • Unlimited pay runs, with no extra charge for off-cycle runs.
  • Global payroll: native payroll in 10 countries, contractor payments in more than 185 countries, and employee payments in 50+ currencies. Rippling also offers employer-of-record (EOR) services in 80 countries.
  • Accounting integrations with QuickBooks, Xero, Oracle NetSuite, and others.
  • AI-assisted payroll tools that can automate repetitive tasks like adding one-time bonuses and comparing payroll runs before approval.
  • Same-day payroll through Rippling’s Business Banking product: make changes up to 1PM EST on payday and correct payroll errors the same day, per Rippling’s own site.

Per vendor’s claim: Rippling payroll can run in as little as 90 seconds, so treat it as marketing until your demo.

On payroll itself, both reviewers describe the same product: automatic tax filing, direct deposit, reimbursements, and global payroll in 50+ currencies. Business.com’s cautions are about cost structure rather than payroll features: no published pricing, and costs that can add up as you stack modules on top of the required platform.

What does Rippling’s IT side add?

This is where Rippling separates from payroll-first competitors. The IT module includes:

  • Device management: order, ship, and manage laptops and other hardware for employees, including remote workers.
  • App management: provision and deprovision 600+ third-party apps from one dashboard. When someone joins, their accounts get created. When they leave, access gets cut.
  • Inventory management: track who has what device.

Forbes calls device management and inventory management “unique features for remote teams.” If you run a distributed team and currently juggle a separate MDM tool, this is the strongest argument for Rippling over Gusto.

Two paths: an all-in-one HR platform or a simpler payroll tool

Rippling vs Gusto

This is the comparison most buyers actually run. Here is how they stack up:

Category Rippling Gusto
Best for 10-500 employees, all-in-one HR/IT 1-25 employees (per Rippling)
Pricing model Modular, custom quote; platform starts at $8/user/mo Published tiers; Simple is $49/mo + $6/person
Payroll Add-on module; global payroll in 50+ currencies Core product; US payroll + contractors in 120+ countries
IT/device management Yes, built in No
Transparent pricing No Yes
Free trial No (demo only) Yes

Gusto’s pricing page lists Simple at $49/month plus $6 per person. Gusto also offers a contractor-only plan at $35/month. Unlike Rippling, Gusto publishes all of this upfront.

On payroll speed, both move fast: Gusto offers next-day, same-day, and instant payroll options, while Rippling offers same-day payroll through its Business Banking product — make changes up to 1PM EST on payday and correct payroll errors the same day, per Rippling’s own site. Worth confirming on the demo whether the Business Banking account is required to get it.

Who is Rippling for?

Based on Rippling’s own materials and the two reviews:

  • Companies with 10 to 500 employees that want HR, payroll, and IT on one platform. Rippling’s affiliate program materials describe this as the core fit.
  • Remote or hybrid teams that need device management and global payroll. Forbes specifically recommends Rippling for teams making the international leap.
  • Businesses that want automation depth and are willing to pay for the Pro edition to get Formula Fields, webhooks, and advanced workflows.

Who should skip Rippling?

Forbes says skip it if your HR needs are simple and could be served by a tool like Justworks or Gusto, if you need transparent pricing upfront, or if you employ a lot of hourly workers. In that last case, it points to Homebase. Business.com adds two more groups: companies that want a simple all-in-one package without picking individual modules, and anyone who wants to try the software with a free trial first. Forbes also warns that basic payroll management on Rippling can be expensive, which matters most if all you need is affordable payroll.

That last point matters more than it looks. Rippling’s own payroll review post says only administrators, not individual employees, can contact its support team directly. For a lean team without an HR admin, that is worth knowing before the demo.

Questions to ask on the Rippling demo call

Since pricing is custom, the demo call is where the real numbers come out. Ask these:

  1. What is the total per-employee cost for the exact modules we need, including the platform fee?
  2. Which edition do we need for custom workflows and formula fields, and what does Pro add to our quote?
  3. How does onboarding a remote employee in [your country] work, and what are the EOR costs if we need them?
  4. What does implementation actually take for a company our size, and what does it cost?
  5. How does same-day payroll work if we keep our existing bank account? Is the Business Banking account required to get it?

Verdict

Rippling is the strongest all-in-one pick for companies between 10 and 500 employees that want HR, payroll, and IT on a single platform, especially remote teams that need device management and global payroll. The $8/user/month starting price is real, but it is only the entry ticket: the modules you actually need are custom-quoted, and both major reviewers warn the total can climb.

If you want published pricing, a free trial, or simple US payroll for a small team, Gusto is the more honest fit. If you want one system to run HR, payroll, and IT as you scale, Rippling earns its demo.
